Start-up of a distillation column

The benchmark is on the start-up of an integrated thermal separation unit. The considered system is a classical distillation column with 25 stages, which is equipped with a vapour recompression unit. The benchmark problem is to operate the plant for large transitions such as start-up and load changes. In the normal operating point, the overhead vapour is compressed and fed to a vapour holdup at the compressor outlet. In this way its condensing temperature is higher than the boiling temperature of the mixture in the column bottom. Hence, the condensation heat can be used as evaporation energy in the distillation process. The condensed vapour is then fed into a flash tank where the pressure is reduced. A part of the compressed vapour bypasses the condensation via a bypass valve and is fed to the flash tank. The flash tank has an extra cooling to condense parts of the bypass stream and the flash vapour.  The flash tank outflow is split into the reflux and the product outflow. During the startup procedure, an additional heat flow can be used for evaporation of the liquid in the bottom of the distillation column.  A complete description of the process and its specifications, together with a Matlab/Simulink simulation model is available at http://www.control.tu-berlin.de/Benchmark_Distillation 

 

UAV Formation Flying

The benchmark is proposed to investigate the rendezvous and formation forming problems for the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) case. After a brief description of the dynamical model for the selected UAV, two different scenarios to be addressed within the Hycon2 framework are suggested. Also three different metrics for performance evaluation are presented. Matlab files with an UAV simulator are also provided.

Power Network System

This benchmark exercise addresses the problem of designing the Automatic Generation Control (AGC) layer in power network systems for testing software and methods developed in Hycon2 for decentralized and distributed control. In particular, it presents three different scenarios and discusses performance levels that can be reached using Centralized Model Predictive Control (MPC). These results can be used as a milestone for comparing the performance of alternative control schemes.

Oxygen Network System

The benchmark proposed is a laboratory Oxygen Distribution Network and its associated plants located in the System Engineering and Automatic Control Department of the University of Valladolid, Spain. It consist of two oxygen generators and distribution collectors that feed three reactors, sharing This benchmark is developed for testing methods and software implemented in Hycon2, mainly, for decentralized and distributed control and, on the other hand, for testing uncertainty handling in process optimization. Controlling and optimizing the operation of several processes that share several common resources is a challenging problem because of the additional constraints imposed by these links. Besides the operation on the laboratory plant using OPC, it is possible to use a simulated plant in EcosimPro and Matlab. A simulator with a HMI for real time operation is also available.

The Catalonia Regional Water Network

Proposed by Technical University of Catalonia (UPC)

The proposed benchmark is the so-called Ter-Llobregat system within the Catalonia Inland Basins, from which the Metropolitan area of Barcelona is fed and where most of the population is concentrated. This case study consists in a network that gathers the water catchment system with storing capacity (big dams) and the transport and supply system that brings water to the cities and villages located around the city of Barcelona as well as the city itself. This big network involves the basins of three important rivers of the zone: Ter, Llobregat and Besós. Additionally, it considers a couple of desalination plants. Once water is available within the system, it is processed in treatment plants (ETAP) and transported to each village or town to be distributed to the costumers. The network is composed by a complex system of links (pipes), pumps, valves and deposits, which should be managed and controlled in real time in order to satisfy the water demand. Related to this, all decisions taken in the management of this network should be properly synchronised with the planning management done over the water catchment system. Moreover, water transport strategies should be designed such that electric costs are optimised while the demand is covered.
